The trading instrument is the exchange rate of 1 barrel of Brent crude oil to the US dollar.
Brent is one of the main brands of oil, which is traded on international exchanges. Brent is listed on the ICE (Futures Europe) futures exchange in London. The brand is named after the eponymous Brent field in the North Sea, discovered in 1970. The word Brent consists of the first letters of the formation names: Broom, Rannoch, Etieve, Ness, Tarbat. Today, oil of this brand is a mixture of several grades produced at the offshore fields of Brent, Forties, Oseberg and Ekofisk in the North Sea. This is because in the mid-1980s, production in the Brent field began to decline. Gradually, oil from other fields (Forties, Oseberg and Ekofisk) was added to the grade. The mixture was eventually called BFOE. Brent (Brent oil, or Brent crude oil) is the world benchmark of “black gold” in terms of quality, properties, and composition. This grade is optimal from the point of view of refining and production of petroleum products. The more different oil is in composition and its properties from the Brent benchmark, the lower its price. The cost of Brent determines prices on the world oil market, which means, it has been a marker since 1980.
